We love to nerd out about coffee, and we’re happy to share that nerdiness with you. You’ve probably heard of 2nd or 3rd wave coffee, but many folks don’t know what that means.
A quick history lesson
When coffee first began to be traded as a commodity, we call that 1st Wave Coffee. Think post-WW2 Folgers and Maxwell House. The taste was ok, but coffee’s purpose at this point was more utilitarian: waking you up.
Moving forward into the 1970s we have the beginning of 2nd Wave Coffee. 2nd Wave Coffee features fun, sweet flavors often served at roadside coffee huts with punny names. These sweet specials improved the coffee’s taste.
3rd Wave Coffee gained popularity in the early 2000s and features the rise of specialty (aka really delicious) coffees. Picture your favorite coffee house and small batch roasters. 3rd Wave Coffee highlights the uniqueness of each batch of coffee.
And here’s that pretentious part again. 4 Wave Coffee isn’t fully defined yet, but one feature is great coffee made at home. The pandemic lockdowns and economic concerns had us all experimenting with making our favorite coffee drinks in our own kitchens. That’s where BCR comes in. For many, our morning coffee has become a ritual that helps us start the day on a good note. At Blind Coffee Roasters, we love roasting small batch coffees to make your morning ritual wonderful.
